3 Day Chimpanzee Trekking Tour in Uganda Itinerary
Day 1: Kampala – Kibale Forest National Park
Leave Kampala at 7:00 am in the morning on your Chimpanzee Trekking Safari. This day will be a traveling day as you go to the destination of the day. This is a 4 hour plus drive through scenic Uganda.
Enjoy an afternoon guided walk in the Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary. Here you are taken into the world of a jungle swamp, a rather unique experience.
Much of the walk is across walkways using wooden planks so that you are above the swamp. Light hiking boots are fine for most, you can rent for a nominal fee rubber boots in case you would like.
This is a three-hour walk and is a must for bird lovers. It is also for those that want something out of the ordinary. There is a jungle swamp, those that enjoy monkeys and primates, some of them rare elsewhere.
Primates here include Red Colobus Monkeys, Gray Cheeked Mangabey’s and L’Hoest Monkeys. There are also Vervet Monkeys, Blue Monkeys, Baboons, Black and White Colobus. We can’t forget Red Colobus, and the occasional Chimpanzees.
Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary is also home to many mammals. Here you will find the rare and elusive sitatunga. This is a semi-aquatic antelope (they have webbed toes). Tere are also Bush Pigs, Bush Bucks, Otters, Mongooses.
138 plus species of birds have been spotted here. Bigodi Wetlands is best known for being home to the Great Blue Turaco.
You will spot many varieties of birds such as Papyrus Gonoleks, Hornbills and Waxbills. Other are Weavers, Cuckoos, Kingfishers, Flycatchers to name just a few.
There are many species of birds found here. Return to Primate Lodge in time for dinner and overnight.
About Kibale National Park
Kibale National Park stands in the west of Uganda. It is in the shadows of Rwenzori Mountains dubbed the legendary mountains of the moon.
This Uganda National Park features a varied tract and lovely tropical forest. They date back to the prehistoric era supporting a range of flora, fauna and birds. This has made it an ideal destination for travelers on safaris in Uganda.
The Uganda safari destination of Kibale National Park features 70 species of mammals. There are 13 primate Species in this national park. They include the chimpanzees, l’hoest, Patas, baboons among others.
There are over 375 bird species here with one endemic species the ground thrush. The forest also supports 351 tree species some of which are about 55m in height and about 200 years old.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking
After breakfast, embark on the activity of the day that is chimpanzee tracking. Chimpanzee tracking is about 3 hours plus in length. Kibale Forest is the best place in East Africa for chimpanzee tracking.
Kibale forest is where the West African jungles meet East Africa. Kibale Forest is home to 13 species of primates. You will see about 5 or 6 species as you are tracking the chimpanzees.
Besides the Chimpanzees there is the fabulous rain forest. The other primates, the trees, the flowers and plenty of birds. There are sounds of the Rain Forest, butterflies floating through the air.
The place to be, and then there are the chimpanzees grabbing your attention. You are glad you came to Kibale Forest for Chimpanzee Tracking.
You are with the chimpanzees for one hour and get to observe them up close. This will allow you to take some close-up pictures.
The chimpanzees are habituated. This is a process that takes up to two years. It is to get the chimpanzees used to human presence. This makes them continue with their activities while you are present. Return to the lodge for relaxation.
Day 3: Top of World Hike – return to Kampala
Breakfast at your lodge and we are off for the top of the world nature walk. It is a hike that is guided through villages and tea plantations.
You will head to the crater lakes to the viewpoint where you see from above crater lakes. There are the Rwenzori Mountains of the moon, villages and Queen Elizabeth Park in a distance.
It is best to have a day-pack and a liter of water with you, a few granola bars and use light hiking boots during this hike.
You will enjoy an early lunch before returning back to Kampala. Arrival will be early in the evening.
