The volcanoes are: Mount Karisimbi, Mount Bisoke, Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo. They cover over 160 km2 of rain forest and bamboo.
Several years ago, this same park acted as a base for American zoologist Dian Fossey. This was a lady who turned out to be so passionate about Gorilla conservation. Her works still live on till today.
Some of these mammals include: golden monkeys, buffaloes, black-fronted duiker, hyenas then bushbucks. A few reports also clam that a small number of elephants can be found at the park but on very rare occasions.

About Akagera National Park
Akagera National Park’s proximity to Kigali makes it a perfect day trip destination. It is love also by those on two-day excursion from the Rwandan capital. It offers something different from the rolling hills and dense jungle thats common here.
Akagera can’t hope to compare to more established game-drive parks. Efforts to move both rhinos and lions to the park mean that Akagera is a Big Five destination. Elephant, rhino, and leopard sightings are uncommon. A day or two in Akagera is a great way to spot wildlife you wouldn’t find anywhere else in Rwanda.
The park’s recent renewal means that it remains an off-the-beaten-path destination. Its a great place to get away from the tourists that crowd parks like Nyungwe and Volcanoes.
The park offers a diverse range of activities. They include night game drives, boat safaris on Lake Ihema, and behind the scenes tours. This enables visitors a greater understanding of the work that goes on in the park.
