Detailed 3 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali – Parc Nationale Des Volcans

Our Rwanda safari rep will meet you on arrival at the Kigali Airport. You may also be met at your hotel in Kigali. You will be briefed on your Rwanda gorilla trek. This will be followed by departure from Kigali.

You will be heading to the Volcanoes National Park. The park is the only home of Mountain gorillas in Rwanda. We have Bwindi and Mgahinga in Uganda and Virunga in D. R. Congo as other habitats.

You will arrive in the early afternoon. The evening will be spent at leisure. If you wish, you may tour the villages around. This is to acquaint you with their lifestyles.

You will return to Le’ Bambou Gorilla Safari Lodge in the evening. This is in time for dinner and overnight.

About Volcanoes National Park

This is Rwanda’s most important tourist hotspot. Volcanoes National Park is the 160km2. This park protects the Rwandan sector of the Virunga Mountains.

At least six extinct and three active volcanoes within the area. They straddle the Ugandan and Congolese borders. These volcanoes protect more than half the global population of the charismatic mountain gorilla.

Volcanoes National Park is a magnificent and diverse destination. It is a chain of steep free-standing mountains. It spans altitudes of 2,400m to 4,507m. They are linked by fertile saddles formed by solidified lava flows.

It ranks among the most stirring and memorable of African landscape. The tallest member of the chain and the most west part of the national park is Karisimbi. It stands at 4507m on the border with the DRC, and Mgahinga and Muhavura on the Ugandan border.

Day 2:  Rwanda Gorilla trekking Volcanoes

Your day on Rwanda gorilla trek will start early. You will wake up to an early breakfast at 0600hrs. With picnic lunch boxes and water packed leave for the park headquarters.

It is here that you will be briefed on the day’s activity. You will be grouped in 8s depending on the group of gorilla you are trekking. You will be joined by an armed ranger and a guide. You will also be joined by porters. It is time to embark on the main activity.

Taking different tracks, you will head in search of the giant mountain apes. Mountain gorilla trek can be quite tough depending on the terrain. The weather may also affect your trek. The trek may also vary depending on the location of the gorilla family being trekked. This may take approximately 2-8 hours.

You will have an hour with these giant apes. Study their behavior, grooming and social life. You will have a stop for lunch before heading back. Your driver guide will be available to transfer you back to your lodge in Volcanoes.

In the afternoon you will have the time at leisure. You may also walk around if you still got the energy. Dinner and overnight will be at Le’ Bambou Gorilla Safari Lodge.

Day 3: Volcanoes National Park – Kigali

You will start your Rwanda gorilla trek with an early breakfast. This will be followed by checking out. You are heading back to the capital Kigali. On arrival, you will enjoy a Kigali city tour.

This takes you to The Kigali Genocide Memorial centre at Gisozi. You will also be able to visit colorful markets and craft centers. You will get to learn how people have managed to move on after the genocide.

First hand narrations will help you paint a picture of what happened. Today’s lunch is on own arrangement. You will later be dropped at your hotel in Kigali. For those flying out, a transfer to Kigali airport will do.
