Chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda is in Nyungwe national park in the south of Rwanda. The two areas where chimps can be trekked in Nyungwe are Cyamudongo and Uwinka.
Chimpanzee trekking begins early morning. Visitors expected to arrive at the briefing point in Uwinka to start trekking at 5:00 am. You are allowed to stay 1 hour with the chimps after locating them with the help of your ranger guide.

Detailed 2 Day Rwanda Chimpanzee Trekking Safari itinerary
Day 1: Kigali – Nyungwe Forest
You will be met by our African safari in Rwanda rep at Kigali International Airport. This might also be in your hotel in Kigali. Enjoy a detailed briefing on the Rwanda chimpanzee safari. This is after you are done with introductions.
It is time for adventure that commences with a drive southward. Your destination will be Nyungwe Forest National Park. You will stop in Nyanza to enjoy the historical and cultural wealth. This is the Kingdom that ruled Rwanda before the white man arrived. It is here that the story of Rwanda’s birth will be told.
Do not shy away to enter the traditional houses that formed the King’s palace. Proceed with your journey to Butare where you will break for lunch. You can opt to sample the cultural museum in Butare if time allows.
Your Rwanda chimpanzee trekking safari will proceed to Murambi Genocide Memorial Centre. Here you will get to hear the genocide story on this part of Rwanda. There are both photos, video and preserved remains on this sad story.
Proceed to Nyungwe after the story that lets you not assume the importance of peace. You will arrive for dinner and overnight at Nyungwe Forest Lodge.
About Nyungwe Forest National Park
Nyungwe Forest National Park is in the southwest corner of Rwanda. It is a vast untouched tropical rainforest with a high, dense canopy. Nyungwe became a National Park in 2004. This was when Rwanda sought to increase its tourism. They were going beyond the country’s mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park. It is worthy of its status because of its spectacular biodiversity.
The heart of Nyungwe Forest is like a scene from a fairy tale. There are tall old mahoganies, ebonies and giant tree ferns that tower above you. The orchids and other epiphytes cling to every branch.
Here you will find coloured birds flitting around as butterflies are everywhere. Walking in silence may allow you encounter larger forest residents. They include variety of primates for which Nyungwe National Park is popular for.
To get a real sense of the scale of Nyungwe, try East Africa’s highest canopy walk. It comes with a metal bridge suspended 50 metres above the forest. The views of Nyungwe sprawled out below from the canopy are unforgettable.
Day 2: Nyungwe Forest – Kigali
Your Rwanda chimpanzee safari day starts quite early. This is with a wakeup call at 0430 hrs. You will enjoy a hot cup of tea or coffee. You should be assembled at the park headquarters by 0500 hrs.
After briefing on chimpanzee trek embark on the day’s activity. This will be by driving to chimpanzee trek starting points. Rwanda chimpanzee trekking can take anything from a few hours to a full day. It will depend on the location of the chimpanzees.
There are several other primates in Nyungwe Forest. They include Rwenzori colobus, L’Hoest’s monkey, Silver monkey and the Owl faced monkey. You will also find the Grey cheeked Mangabey here.
After the trek you will return to the lodge for lunch and check out. You will leave back to Kigali to arrive later in the early evening.
