Detailed 3 Day Nyungwe Forest Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali – Nyungwe Forest National Park
You will be met by our Rwanda safari rep in the morning. This will be either from your hotel or airport. You will be briefed on this 3 days Nyungwe forest chimpanzee safari. This is to be followed by departure.
You will be headed for the Nyungwe Forest National Park. Stop at the traditional Rwanda King’s palace in Nyanza. Another stop will be at the Cultural Museum in Butare. Later on, drive past green tea fields which are scattered on the hillsides.
You will go through the small wooden houses all the way to Nyungwe. Your arrival will be in the evening where you will check into your hotel. Enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure. Your dinner and overnight will be at Nyungwe Forest Lodge.
About Nyungwe Forest National Park
Nyungwe Forest National Park has the largest remaining tract of montane rainforest. This is in the whole of East Africa. It extends for 1,015 km2 over the mountainous southwest of Rwanda. It forms a contiguous forest block with Burundi’s 370 km2 Kibira Narktional Park.
This Rwanda National Park is the most important catchment area. It supplies water to 70% of the country. Nyungwe’s central ridge divides Africa’s two largest drainage systems. That is the Nile and the Congo, a spring on the slopes of the 2,950m Mount Bigugu. It is now regarded to be most remote source of the world’s longest river.
Nyungwe is a remarkable rich centre of biodiversity. It has more than 1,050 plant species, 250 Albertine Rift Endemics and 200 orchids. It also comes along with at least 120 butterfly species.
The vertebrate fauna includes 32 amphibians, 38 reptiles and 85 mammals. There are 310 bird species of which about 15% are Albertine Rift Endemics here.
At Nyungwe primates are the main attraction. 13 species are present including chimpanzee with a population estimated at 500-1000. Several other monkeys are easy to see. They include the L’Hoest’s monkey and acrobatic Ruwenzori colobus.
Nyungwe is alluring to birders, botanist and keen walkers. There are 130 network of walking trails within the national park. The only sight for suspended canopy walk, the park features few tourist itineraries. This is because the forest trails need a lot of stamina than Volcanoes National Park.
Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest National Park
Start your Nyungwe forest chimpanzee safari with an early breakfast. You will leave for briefing at 0500 hrs at the park headquarters. This is followed by the Chimpanzee tracking activity within the forest.
You will be in search for the man’s closest friends. This is in the company of an armed Forest Ranger. There will also be guides who will show you different forest trail. The chimpanzee trekking activity takes around 3-5 hours.
You will return to the lodge for lunch and some rest. In the afternoon, you will take a guided nature walk with in the forest. This will enable you to spot different bird species with in the forest. Look out for black and white casqued hornbill and Rwenzori Turacco. Dinner and overnight stay will be at Nyungwe Forest Lodge.
Day 3: Nyungwe Forest – Kigali
Your Nyungwe Forest Lodge starts with an early breakfast. You will leave for Kigali arriving in the early afternoon. You will have time for a city tour that goes to Kigali Genocide Center.
You will be dropped off at your hotel in Kigali. For those flying out enjoy a transfer to the airport. This is in time for your scheduled flight back home.
