About Namib-Naukluft National Park
The Namib Desert is a region which should be included on any visit to Namibia, and is, quintessentially, what the country is about.
The main Namib Naukluft National Park extends from the Luderitz area in the south to the Walvis Bay/Swakopmund area in the north, and inland to cover much of the vast Namib dune belt. To the east are a number of private conservancies from which you can explore this wilderness.
Within the National Park lie the renowned Sossusvlei dunes, which rise some 300m from valley floor. Sossusvlei is a huge dried up clay pan formed at the end of the Tsauchab River where the huge dunes stopped its progress toward the sea.
Nearby are two other pans, Hidden Vlei and Dead Vlei. If you’re feeling fit, you can climb the dunes for a spectacular view of the surrounding area.
The Sesriem Canyon is one of the most amazing features of this desert. Here, the Tsauchab River has carved a gorge (up to 100 ft deep) into the gravels deposited around 16 million years ago.
The canyon dates back to about 3 million years ago, when continental uplift caused the incision of most of the westward flowing rivers in Namibia. The canyon is about a kilometer long and becomes shallower as it makes its way towards Sossusvlei.
Day 2: Sesriem & Sossusvlei Dunes
You will begin the second day of your 3 days Namibia dunes safari early. You should be arriving at the entrance to the Namib-Naukluft National Park in time for sunrise. You will drive through the national park seeing the changing colors as the sun goes up. You will switch to the 4×4 shuttle at the parking area to the famous Sossusvlei Dunes.
Your 3 day Namibia dune safari arrives at the striking dunes early in the day. You’ll get to admire the orange-red tinged dunes in the warm morning light. This is one of the most remarkable highlights of Namibia. You can observe the tall ochre dunes and stark contrasts under wide skies.
You will walk around at Sossusvlei surrounded by some of the tallest sand dunes on the planet. From Sossusvlei ypu’ll move on to the nearby Dead Vlei. This is also inside the Namib-Naukluft Park.
Dead Vlei is a white, clay pan scattered with dead trees. It stands in stark contrast to the sun-bleached earth and red-orange dunes fringing the dry pan.
After seeing this strange and photogenic desert highlight you can walk back to the vehicle. The drive will stop at the best-known landmark dune – Dune 45. You have the chance to climb the dune and enjoy the views out over the desert.
You may also choose to relax at the foot of this iconic peak. Your 3 day Namibia Dunes safari will then continue to Sesriem Canyon. You will take a walk into this narrow canyon. Here layer upon layer of ancient sedimentary rock can be seen in the steep walls. Sometimes the canyon floor is dotted with pools of water that are deep enough to take a dip in.
