Mozambique Birding Safari

Day 1: Maputo
You will be met upon arrival by our Mozambique safari rep. This will be upon your arrival at the airport. He will brief you on the Mozambique birding safari. This will be followed by a transfer to your hotel in Maputo. You are booked on bed and breakfast basis.
Day 2: Maputo – Casa Lisa
You will wake up to your breakfast on Mozambique birding safari. This is before your Mozambique birding safari departs south. You will be heading to Casa Lisa today.
Among the birds to be seen here include Senegal Lapwing and Eastern Nicato. You will also see the Purple-crested Turaco and the Magpie Mannikin.
Day 3 – 4: Casa Lisa – Inhambane
Wake up to the sounds of bird on this Mozambique birding safari. You’ll then depart towards the coastal town of Inhambane while birding along the way.
Inhambana will be the base for the next 2 nights. You should keep an eye out for Pale Bati and Brown-headed Parrot. Other birds include Mangrove Kingfisher and Terek Sandpiper. You also have the Crab Plover and Black-throated Wattle-eye.
Day 5 – 6: Inhambane – Vilankulo
On day 5 of Mozambique birding safari you travel to Vilankulos. This is known as the gateway to the Bazaruto archipelago.
Vilankulo will be the base for the next 2 nights. Here you’ll explore the Bazaruto archipelago by boat. You will also be able to do mainland birding that includes Green Malkoha. You also have the Madagascar Bee-eater, Eurasian Oystercatcher and Crab Plover. You will also find the Greater Frigatebird and Chestnut-fronted helmet-shrike.
Day 7: Vilankulo – Nova Mambone
Today your Mozambique birding safari explores Nova Mambone. This is situated close to Inhambane. You can continue working on your eastern bird species list. Remember to keep an eye open for Madagascar Bee-eater. There is also the Greater Frigatebird and more.
Day 8 – 10: Nova Mambone – Vumba and Eastern Highlands
On day eight of Mozambique birding safari you will head inland. This will be to Mozambique’s Eastern Highlands. This will be your base for the next 3 days. Keep an eye open for Livingstone’s Turaco and Buff-spotted Flufftail. You also have the Whyte’s Barbet, Blue-spotted Dove and Chirinda Apalis. Let us not forget the Eastern Saw-wing.
Day 11: Eastern Highlands – Mount Gorongose
Your Mozambique birding safari will be able to explore Mount Gorongosa. Here you’ll search for the Green-headed Oriole. You can also spot Swynnerton’s Robin and Moustached Grass-Warbler. You cannot miss the Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon here too.
Day 12 – 14: Mount Gorongose – Caia and Mwanza
Your Mozambique birding safari will leave the mountain and head northeast. Here the Mozambique birding safari experience mix woodland birding. You’ll go along the Zambezi River which is home to a range of wetland species. Keep an eye out for White-chested Alethe and Red-throated Twinspot. There is the Green-backed Woodpecker and Speckle-throated Woodpecker. You’ll also find the Cabanis’ Bunting and White-breasted Cuckooshrike. You’ll also get the Barred Long-tailed Cuckoo and Violet-backed Sunbird here.
Day 15- 17: Mwanza – Rio Savane
Experience excellent birding at central Mozambique’s popular birding spots. Rio Savane is your last birding destination and offers a diverse range of bird habitats. You will be able to spot Tiny Greenbul, Woodward’s Batis, Mangrove Kingfisher, Blue Quail, Angola Pitta, Black-rumped Buttonquail, Great Snipe and Palm-nut Vulture.
Day 18: Beira – Maputo
Today is the last day of your birding safari in Mozambique. You will spend the morning in the Rio Save area enjoying a few hours of birding before packing up and returning to Beira. You will arrive at Beira around mid-day where you will then catch a flight for Maputo.
