Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb is a 14 days expedition. This is an African safari in Kenya and Tanzania. Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb starts and ends in Nairobi.
In Kenya you will use Sirimon out Chogoria route. While in Tanzania you will use the popular Marangu route on Kilimanjaro climbing.
Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro Climbing
Your Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb takes you to Mt Kenya. This is the second highest mountain in Africa. It’s one of the best trekking and climbing mountains with Biodiversity.
You will enjoy the best sceneries ever to be found on another Mountain in Africa. It offers the most rewarding site on sunrise with views of Mt Kilimanjaro. This is at point Lenana. You will be able to see the Kenyan coast and Mt Elgon.
Mount Kilimanjaro on the other hand is the highest in Africa. It is also the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro Climbing Itinerary
Day 1: NAIROBI – NANYUKI
You will be met by our Kenya safari rep in Nairobi. He will brief you on the Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb. This will be followed by a transfer at 0900 hrs to Nanyuki. Enjoy a complimentary walking tour to the Equator. Enjoy the afternoon in preparation for the next day. Your dinner and overnight will be at at Simbas Lodge.
Day 2: SIRIMON GATE – JUDMEIER CAMP
Start your Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb with breakfast. You will then drive to Sirimon Park gate to start the trek. There will be 3 – 4 hours trek to Old Moses Camp (Judmeier). This is 9km that goes through a beautiful forest.
The forest is composed of East African Pencil Cedar trees. There are also Poducarpus trees and the giant Hygenia trees. From Judmeier camp you can see the summits of Batian and Nelion peaks.
Day 3: OLD MOSES (JUDMAIER) CAMP – SHIPTONS CAMP
You will wake up to an early Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb breakfast. Today you have 6 – 8 hour hike crossing Liki and Mackinders valleys. There is a great view of Tereri and Sendeo peaks. You will also a great view of Nanyuki town and beautiful terrain. Shipton’s camp has also an excellent setting. You will cover a distance of 13kms today.
Day 4: SHIPTON’S CAMP – POINT LENANA – MINTOS CAMP
This Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb is about 4.5 hours. You will go through some of the most spectacular sceneries. They include Gorges valley and the Halls Tarns. Lake Elies will be at a far distance. You will rich the peak at Point Lenana to savor your victory. This will be followed by a descent to Mintos Campisite. It is also referred to as the Halls Tarns camp.
Day 5: MINTOS – MERU MOUNT KENYA LODGE
This hike on Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb takes between 4 – 6 hours. This area has spectacular views down into the Gorges valley. You will also see Lake Michaelson and Vivienne falls.
Across on the other side you can see Ithanguni peak and Rotundu peaks. There is alsothe Giant Flat top Kilingo hill table. You will cover a distance of about 18kms. Overnight will be at Meru Mount Kenya Lodge.
Day 6: CHOGORIA GATE – CHOGORIA TOWN – NAIROBI
You will have a 6 – 8 hours on dirt roads. This walk takes you through a thick bamboo forest and tropical forest. The forest is really beautiful with chances of seeing wildlife and Columbus monkeys. You will walk half way to meet your vehicle. Transfer to Nairobi arriving late afternoon. Drop off at the Kenya Comfort Hotel booked on bed and breakfast.
Day 7: NAIROBI – ARUSHA
Start your day on Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb with an early breakfast. You will be ready for the 0730hrs shuttle to Arusha. This will be a drive through the Namanga border into Tanzania. Dinner and overnight will be at Kibo Hotel in Arusha. Your accommodation is booked on bed and breakfast basis.
Day 8: MARANGU GATE (5,900 ft) – MANDARA HUT (8,860 ft)
You will then leave from Arusha at 0800hrs. Enjoy a two hours transfer to Marangu village. At the gate you will register and complete other administrative formalities. You will have an opportunity of meeting with porters and guides. It is from here that you begin the 4 to 5 hour Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb to Mandara Hut.
The walk is at a leisurely pace through a dense and humid forest. If you feel up to it at day’s end, walk to the nearby Maundi crater. From here you will have a long view over the plains and Lake Jipe. From a distance you will also be able to see the Pare and Usambara mountains. You will have the night at Mandara Hut.
Day 9: MANDARA HUT – HOROMBO HUT (12,200 ft)
Your Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb day starts early. An early morning breakfast will warm you for the walk. Start with 45 minutes trek into the forest. This walk suddenly takes upon an area of high grasses of the heather belt. You will continue with the trek into the moorland.
Note the change in vegetation from grasses to desert-like. The days hike will be between 5 to 6 hours depending on one’s pace. This walk will bring you to Horombo Hut. From here you can enjoy the stunning view of Mawenzi Peak. Night will be spent in one of the huts in Horombo.
Day 10: HOROMBO HUT – ACCLIMITIZATION DAY
Enjoy an extra Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb day in Horombo Hut. This is to help your body’s acclimatize. You will also have time to absorb the beautiful scenery. You can trek to the base of Mawenzi. This is nearly 15,000 feet (4,600 m). This trek passes through the Zebra Rock. There is a striking landscape of the moorland zone. Your overnight will be at Horombo Hut.
Day 11: HOROMBO HUT – KIBO HUT (15,430 ft)
Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb on this day will take about 6 to 7 hours. The trek takes you across the alpine desert of the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi. The last fresh water point is at 14,100 ft. (4,300 mt.). At this point it will be necessary to refill your water bottles.
Your porters will carry the rest of the water required for food and hot beverages. The saddle crossing is impressive and the landscape spectacular. Night will be spent at Kibo Hut.
Day 12: KIBO HUT – UHURU PEAK – HOROMBO HUT
This is the D-day on Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb. You will be woken early with a steaming cup of coffee or tea. This should be at midnight to prepare to leave by 0100 hrs.
The temperatures range from just below freezing at midnight. These are between 10 ᴼF (-12ᴼC) to –10 ᴼF. (-23 ᴼC) just before dawn at Gillman’s point. This is about 18,652 ft. (5,685 m) on the crater rim.
The winding scree path of endless switchbacks will carry you through the night. At dawn the spires of Mawenzi will be silhouetted against the red glow of the sun. This will be from beneath the clouds.
After about 6 hours of walking, you will come to the edge of the crater. This is near the Ratzel Glacier. From Gillman’s Point, you have another 1.5 hour trek over a gentle slope.
Go around the edge of the crater rim to the target point, the Peak. Uhuru Peak stands at 19,340 ft. (5,895 m). You will enjoy some short time at the summit enjoying your conquest.
After some photo moments on top of Africa, you start the descent. You will go down the steep scree trail back to Kibo Hut. You will enjoy some rest at this point. Proceed further down to Horombo Hut for the night.
Day 13: HOROMBO HUT – MARANGU GATE – ARUSHA
Your Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb takes descends straight to the gate of Marangu. This will be approximately 6 hours of walking. You will have lunch on arrival at the gate.
Finish your expedition with a transfer back to Arusha. You will check in at Kibo Hotel booked on bed and breakfast basis.
Day 14: ARUSHA – NAIROBI
You will end your Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb with a transfer. You will go via Namanga to Nairobi. On arrival you will be transferred to JKIA for your departure flight.
