Damaraland Safari Tour Itinerary

Days 1: Brandberg West

Our Namibia safari rep will meet you at your Swakopmund accommodation. This accommodation is a pre-arranged. You will be briefed on your 4 day Damaraland safari tour. You will then head north via the ‘gem capital’ of Uis. This drive takes you to the Brandberg.

This is Namibia’s highest mountain. It is also home to an impressive collection of rock art. The famous ones is the ‘White Lady’. You can visit these sites for those who haven’t seen them previously. The first night’s camp is near Brandberg West where local trackers will join you.

These are people usually engaged in rhino conservation work. The local guides have enormous experience of the surrounding area. They have sharply-honed tracking skills and good knowledge of individual animals. Elephant or rhino sighting is not guaranteed on the tour. However, there is an excellent success record to date.

Day 2: Ugab River

The second night’s camp is near the enchanting Ugab River. This is a linear oasis which draws countless animals to its water source. This is a desert-adapted elephant country. They are a fascinating group of animals.

They have survived against all the odds in Damarland’s harsh conditions. They roam the Huab and Ugab rivers and tributaries freely. This is in search of vegetation and water. It is these animals that your Damaraland safari tour tracks today. You’ll camp at the Ugab River site.

Day 3: Doros Crater

On the third day, it’s off to the Doros Crater. This is a favorite stamping ground for rhino. This is via the historic settlement site of Gai-As. The black rhino search for shrubs here.

The area is not suitable for white rhino’s who are grazers. You’ll return to the Ugab River banks campsite. This is in time for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Ugab River Banks – Swakopmund

Your Damaraland safari tour leaves for Swakopmund via the Messum Crater. Here is the largest collection of Welwitschia sites in Namibia. The Messum Crater is a secluded volcanic feature in the Gobobose Mountains. It lies west of Brandberg, Namibia. It is over 20km in diameter.

This was one of the volcanoes of the Etendeka period. This was about 133 million years ago. The Welwitschia mirabilis, is a plant that is considered to be living fossil. These plants can live to over 1,000 years. They are named after Dr. Frederich Welwitsch.

He discovered these plants in 1859. You have an option of visiting the Cape Cross Seal Colony. A tour of Henties Bay and the coastal lichen fields are good options too.  You will be dropped off at your budget Swakopmund hotel.
