You will have your first stopover at the equator crossing. A break for souvenir shopping won’t be a bad idea here. A cup of tea or coffee or a toilet break is also in order. Proceed to Mbarara town where you will stop for lunch.
This will be at own cost. Drive to Bwindi and check in at Buhoma Community Bandas in time for dinner and overnight.
About Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has extraordinary altitudinal variation. There is rising and falling from deep river gorges and low hills to high-forested ridges. This ensures a unique range of flora and fauna, in particular birds and primates.
Over 300 mountain gorillas live in the park, half of the world’s population, and two family groups have now been successfully habituated to human approach. Each day, two small groups of visitors are allowed to view these gorillas, for up to one hour – often in exceptionally dense cover.
Please bear in mind that tracking gorillas through the forest requires patience and stamina. Sometimes the trackers find the gorillas within a couple of hours, but it may take up to ten hours of off-trail tracking, in thick jungle, in order to find them.
Steep slopes, intense humidity and regular rainfall add to the challenge, but the exhilaration of a close encounter with these magnificent creatures makes it all worthwhile. Access is always limited to an hour for the gorillas’ wellbeing. For many, seeing a gorilla face-to-face is truly a life-changing experience!
Day 2: MOUNTAIN GORILLA TREKKING
Start your Budget Uganda gorilla trek day with an early breakfast. Proceed to the Bwindi Forest National Park HQ for the morning briefing. Accompanied by an armed ranger and a guide, embark on gorilla trekking in Bwindi.
This may last the entire day depending on the movement and location of the gorillas. The trek goes through the rain forest and bamboo covered slopes.
The walking can sometimes be tough and long. It is rewarding when you catch a glimpse of the magnificent silverback. Any discomforts will be quickly forgotten. When the gorillas are sighted, visitors will be guided to within 7 meters from the gorillas.
You will sit around them for a whole hour while gazing into their big round eyes. Gorilla trekking is unpredictable. It’s difficult to foresee how many hours you will hike. The gorilla excursion can take from 2 up to 8 hours.
Expect to walk along distance in steep and muddy conditions. This can sometimes be accompanied with rain overhead. A good physical condition is recommended. For conservation purposes, time spent with the gorillas is limited to one hour. Return back to at Buhoma Community Bandas in time for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: BWINDI – KAMPALA
Early breakfast will climax your Budget Uganda gorilla trek day. After checkout, you will return to Kampala. You will be driving down the grassed and terraced escarpments of southwestern Uganda. Do not forget to take in the breathtaking sights of the hills.
The area is commonly referred to as ‘the little Switzerland of Africa’. This is because of the terraced farming undertaken here. Also ensure that you don’t miss the impressing long horn Ankole cattle. A lunch break in Mbarara on own account will do you some good. On arrival you will be transferred to your budget hotel in Kampala.
