Detailed 5 day Budget Rwanda Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali – Akagera National Park
You will be received on arrival at Kigali International Airport. This will be by our Rwanda safari rep. Enjoy a detailed briefing on the 5-day budget Rwanda tour. This will be followed by departure from Kigali.
You will be heading for Akagera National Park. You will arrive in time to have your lunch. In the afternoon you will go for a thrilling boat ride on the beautiful Lake Ihema. Here you will be on the lookout for the various water animals.
They include the Hippos, giant crocodiles and a profusion of water birds. The birds include the African fish eagle, papyrus Gonolek and the shoebill stork. You will return for dinner and overnight rest at Akagera budget accommodation facility.
About Akagera National Park
Akagera National Park was gazetted in 1934 and is one of most popular wildlife safari park in Rwanda. It covers an area of approximately 1085 KM. It is just 2 hours drive East of Kigali Rwanda.
Akagera National Park is dominated by the labyrinth of swamps. The lakes that follow the meandering course of the Akagera River, the most remote source of the Nile. This is archetypal African savannah landscape of tangled acacia woodland interspersed with open grassland.
Among the park habitats include Bush Savannah tangled with acacia and branchystagia woodlands. There are stands of Euphorbia candlebrum, patches of rolling grasslands, riverine, lakes and swamps. To the west of the park, there are hills reaching to elevations of 1600m-1800m above sea level.
Akagera is, above all, big game country! Herds of elephant and buffalo emerge from the woodland to drink at the lakes. For lucky visitors might stumble across a leopard, a spotted hyena or even a stray lion.
Giraffe and zebra haunt the savannah, and more than a dozen types of antelope inhabit the park. The most common is the handsome chestnut-coated impala. There is also the diminutive oribi and secretive bushbuck. Others are the tsessebe and the world's largest antelope, the statuesque Cape eland.
Day 2: Akagera National Park - Kigali
Start your budget Rwanda tour day with an early breakfast. You will then embark on a game drive. You will be looking for the early risers plus large predators. This includes Lions and Hyenas plus others such as bush-buck, zebra, Elephants and giraffes.
You also have the Buffaloes, cape elands, impalas, oribi and antelopes. You will return for lunch at your budget safari camp and check out. In the afternoon you will enjoy a drive back to Kigali. You will spend the night at Chez Lando Hotel, Kigali booked on bed and breakfast.
Day 3: Kigali - Nyungwe Forest National Park
Your budget Rwanda tour starts with breakfast. This will be followed by a drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Along the way you will visit several historical plus cultural sites. This will be in Nyanza and within Butare.
Stop by the National Museum as well as the National University in Butare. You will as well visit the Old King’s Palace in Nyanza. It is also known as Old Mwami’s palace. Here you will have a historical and cultural experience.
You will have lunch in the town of Butare before you proceed to Nyungwe. Your arrival in Nyungwe Forest National Park will be later in the evening. This will be in time for dinner and overnight rest at Gisakura Guest House.
About Nyungwe Forest National Park
Nyungwe National Park is located southwestern Rwanda within the Albertine Rift Valley. The park harbors Nyungwe Forest, East Africa's largest and oldest mountain rainforest. It is one of the largest mountainous rainforests remaining in Africa.
Nyungwe has an incredible treasure-trove of biodiversity with an exceptional level of species endemism. Of the 86 species of mammals in Nyungwe, 14 are endemic to the Albertine Rift.
280 avian species have been identified in the forest. Of these 26 Albertine Rift endemic species and 121 forest species. Of the 43 species of reptiles, 8 are endemic. There are 31 species of amphibians with 15 endemic species.
Nyungwe is also known for its abundant butterfly populations. These include 21 Albertine Rift endemic species.
Nyungwe is particularly an important ornithological site in Rwanda. There are more 310 species of birds. It is being sought out for incredible birding opportunities. Here there are several Albertine Rift endemics. This isthe highest concentration found in any single park in Africa.
The park has more than 240 species of trees and more than 140 colorful orchids. There are 1050 plant types, such as the giant lobelia. Of these plants 250 are endemic to the Albertine Rift.
Nyungwe has 13 primate species including habituated chimpanzees. Others include olive baboons, bush babies and monkey species. The monkey species include L'Hoest, Owl-faced Monkey and Mona Monkey. others are Blue Monkey, Golden Monkey, Vervet Monkey and Grey-cheeked Mangaby. We can’t leave out Red-tailed Monkey and the Black and White Colobus.
Other mammals in Nyungwe include among others squirrels, Giant Forest Hogs and Bush Pigs. Here you'll also find Tree Hyrax, Duiker, Leopards, Golden Cat and Serval. We also have Wild Cat, Side-striped Jackal, African Civet and Mongoose.
The highest mountain in the park is Bigugu, reaching an altitude of 2950m. Nyungwe is an important water catchment for Rwanda. Within the park is the most remote source of the Nile.
Day 4: Chimpanzee trek in Nyungwe Forest National Park
Your budget Rwanda tour day will start quite early. This is with a wakeup call at 0400 hrs. Enjoy a cup of hot tea or coffee. Right after breakfast gather at the park hq at 0500 hrs. You will receive a briefing on your day’s activity.
Embark on chimpanzee tracking in the verdant rain forest. During the trek you will have the chance to see various primates. They include the Rwenzori colobus, Silver monkey, Chimpanzees and the Grey cheeked Mangabey.
You may also see the L’hoests monkey and the Owl faced monkey. You will later head back to the lodge where you will rest and have your meals. Your dinner and overnight will be at Gisakura Guest House.
Day 5: Nyungwe – Kigali
