10 Day Namibia Family Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Windhoek – Sesriem

This budget Namibia family safari will start with a pick up from your Windhoek hotel. This will be by our Namibia safari representative. Enjoy a briefing on your Namibia family safari at 0800hrs. This will be followed by departure heading to Sesriem.

The drive today will take you through the Khomas Hoch-land range of mountains. You will go further south west towards the Naukluft Mountains. Lunch will be en route before you get to the open plains. You will proceed and stop at the tiny town of Solitaire. Refreshments and some fuel reserve will be important here.

The drive continues to Agama camp where you are expected late afternoon.  There should be time for a dip in the pool and to see the sun set over the Naukluft Mountains.

Day 2: Sossusvlei

A pre dawn budget Namibia family safari start is essential this morning. This is to be able catch the soft light of the sunrise on the desert. You will pass through Sesriem at sunrise. The drive goes into the dry river bed and you’ll soon start to see dunes on either side.

You will stop for breakfast and preparation for your walk. The walk in the cool of the morning is like nothing else. Enjoy the soft sunlight just beginning to play over the dunes. This will create a sharp light and shadow contrast across the whole desert.

You will look over the ancient mineral pans and stunted camel thorn trees. You have opportunities of seeing gemsbok or maybe an ostrich. The morning will be spent around Sossusvlei. This should also include a visit to dune 45.

As the day progresses on you’ll return to Sesriem for lunch to escape the heat of the afternoon. Take a short excursion to the Sesriem Canyon in the cool of the evening. Your dinner and overnight will be at Agama Camp.

Day 3: Sossusvlei – Swakopmund

You will have an early start on budget Namibia family safari today. You will then start by heading north-west to Swakopmund. This is located on the Skeleton Coast. The drive will leave the dune and get back into the mountain desert. In the Solitaire area you’ll stop at the ‘N/a’an ku se Namib Conservation Centre’.

It is a 500 hectare Conservation Centre. It hosts an educational centre and wildlife tracking unit.  They receive information on the carnivore surveillance in the greater Namib area. After the educational tour you’ll depart and cross the Tropic of Capricorn.

You’ll traverse both the Gaub and the Kuiseb pass. This is followed by a descent to the dry river bed at the bottom of the canyon. On climbing the other side, you’ll watch the spectacular desert landscape unfold before you. From the mountains you cross the desolate ‘Namib gravel plains’.

You’ll reach the coastal sand dunes at the port town of Walvis Bay. There will be a stop for a picnic lunch beside the ocean. You’ll also have time to see the flamingos and other bird life. Your Namibia family safari continues with a short drive into Swakopmund.

This section of the trip is designed to allow people to relax. Your accommodation here is booked on bed and breakfast basis. This is to allow you to plan your time with flexibility not to be tied to group meal times. It also gives you the chance to sample excellent local cafes and restaurants.

The seafood in Swakopmund is superb. You will be accommodated in budget Swakopmund Accommodation.

Day 4: Swakopmund

Today you will be doing the Dolphin Cruise at Walvis Bay. Your guide will take you to the meeting point where you will meet your skipper. Once aboard, the journey starts from the Walvis Bay Waterfront. It will continue into the beautiful Bay Area.

This area holds more beauty than the eye can at first capture. There is a Shipwreck, Lighthouse, Oyster Platforms, different Bird species, Seals and more Marine Life. Your catamarans will pass the Oyster Platforms.

Along this route, your guide will share more information about the Walvis Bay cultivated Oysters. Included in the tour is the tasting of these delicacies. The catamarans will then proceed to the ever-growing Pelican Point. This is to have a closer look at Walvis Bay’s Lighthouse.

Pelican Point also has its own little Jetty. 3 different types of Dolphins may be encountered at Pelican point. This includes the Heavy-side Dolphins that are endemic to the coast of Namibia. There is also the Dusky Dolphins and Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins.

Southern Right Whale and the Humpback Whales may be spotted in season. With luck the mighty Killer Whales can also be seen here. Sightings of the Mola Mola (Sunfish) and the Leatherback Turtles also keep you on the lookout.

All this can be seen while comfortably relaxing in the Saloon, trampolines or on deck. In the afternoon it’s your free time to do more Adventures Activities.  You will be accommodated in budget Swakopmund Accommodation. This section of budget Namibia family safari is booked on bed and breakfast basis.

Day 5: Swakopmund – Twyfelfontein

Your budget Namibia family safari will leave early. You’ll head north along the coast. This will be with a visit to the seal colony at Cape Cross. You may possibly see thousands of Cape Fur Seals in the water. This also includes the surrounding rocks and beaches.

The drive then turns east, inland and back into the desert. You will be travelling on to the small town of Uis. It is an old mining town, located more or less in the middle of no-where. Uis is one of the best places to buy semi-precious stones in Namibia.

From Uis you’ll continue into one of the most beautiful desert regions in Namibia, Damaraland. You will proceed to  pass Namibia’s highest mountain, The Brandberg, (2573 m). Brandberg Mountain is an ancient Bushman spiritual site. You will continue driving to the Twyfelfontein area.

You will have a stopover at the Burnt Mountain and the Organ Pipes. Your camp will be set near Twyfelfontein.

Day 6 & 7: Etosha National Park

Your budget Namibia family safari will be starting early to enjoy the cool of the morning. You will make a detour to the west. This is to visit the ancient Bushman rock engravings at Twyfelfontein. At this location you will have a local guide to conduct you on a short guided tour.

Leaving the engravings you’ll travel via Khorixas to Outjo. There will be a short stop for fresh supplies. You will continue to Etosha’s premier resort, Okaukuejo.Etosha forms the main game viewing section of your Namibia family safari. Okaukuejo area offers you some of the best waterholes in the park. These are the places with the best chance to see some Big Game.

You will enjoy great game drive at Okaukuejo. Located right on the boundary of the camp is a floodlit waterhole. This is within easy walking distance from your camping site. It is here that you’ll enjoy the “after hours” game watching. Dinner and overnight will be at Okaukuejo Campsite.

Day 8: Okaukuejo – Namutoni

You’ll enjoy full day’s game driving on budget Namibia family safari. You will leave early to enjoy the cool morning air. The game drive will make its way through Etosha to Halali camp. This camp is situated in the middle of the park. Along the way we visit several waterholes. They afford you splendid views of the massive Etosha Pan.

The game viewing is usually excellent with a chance to tick off a new species.  There will be a stop at Halali for a rest and a leisurely lunch. There is time to visit the Halali waterhole for game viewing. You may cool your body at the swimming pool and bar facilities.

Later you will be on your way with a game drive over to Namutoni. You must be by your camp before sunset. Once again, there is a floodlit waterhole to visit during the evening. You will enjoy your dinner and sleep at Namutoni Camp Site.

Day 9: Etosha – Waterberg

Your budget Namibia family safari leaves Etosha National Park on the Eastern side. The drive will go through the farmland towards Otjiwarongo. You will visit the Cheetah Conservation Fund. This will include a walking tour of their main facility.

There is the Educational Centre, Cheetah Museum and a Clinic Tour. You will be introduced to the Cheetahs, Dogs and Livestock that live at the main centre. This also includes the feeding of Cheetahs at 1400hrs on weekdays and 1200hrs on Weekends. After lunch you’ll depart and continue driving to Waterberg Plateau.

The Waterberg Plateau has flamboyant brick-red sandstone formations. There are lush green vegetation that presents an island of vibrant color. The 405.5Km² park is situated 60Km east of Otjiwarongo.

This is 300 Km north east of Windhoek and was established in 1972. It was originally created as a sanctuary for rare and endangered species found here. This included the roan and sable antelope, tsessebe and Cape buffalo.

Today the park is home to some 25 game and over 200 bird species. The vegetation changes dramatically starting with acacia savannah at the foot of the plateau. You will move tolush-green sub-tropical dry woodlands. They have tall trees and grassy plains at the top. Your dinner and overnight will be at Waterberg Camp.

Day 10: Waterberg – Windhoek

In the morning your Namibia family safari will depart. You will drive south towards the small town of Okahandja. This is home to Namibia’s largest wood carving market. The stalls operate on a local co-operative basis.

This market offers a vast array of truly Namibian souvenirs. You will proceed to Windhoek arriving at 1600hrs. You’ll be dropped off at your budget hotel in Windhoek.
