Lake Nakuru National Park
From Masai Mara your Amazing Kenya safari heads to Lake Nakuru National Park. This is home to the Lake Nakuru. Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley soda lakes at an elevation of 1,754 m above sea level.
The lake lies to the south of Nakuru, in the rift valley of Kenya and is protected by Lake Nakuru National Park. The lake’s abundance of algae used to attract a vast quantity of flamingos that famously lined the shore
Lake Nakuru National Park started off small, only encompassing the famous lake and the surrounding mountainous vicinity. Now it has been extended to include a large part of the savannahs.
It is however among the smaller parks in Kenya. Currently, the fenced Lake Nakuru National Park covers around 90 square miles. It has unusual but beautiful vegetation.
The forest vegetation is covered with Euphorbia, tall cactus like trees and acacia woodland. The forest region is a host to over 400 migratory bird species from around the world.
Lake Nakuru National Park has a very shallow strongly alkaline lake with 62 kilometers squared. The park is set in a picturesque landscape of surrounding woodland and grassland next to Nakuru town.
The landscape includes areas of marsh and grasslands alternating with rocky cliffs and outcrops, stretches of acacia woodland and rocky hillsides covered with a Euphorbia forest on the eastern perimeter.
The lake catchment is bounded by Menengai crater to the north, the Bahati hills to the north east, the lion hill ranges to the east, eburu crater to the south and the Mau escarpment to the west.
There are three major rivers; the njoro, makalia and enderit drain into the lake, together with treated water from the town’s sewage works and the outflow from several springs along the shore.
Lake Nakuru was first gazetted as a bird sanctuary in 1960 and upgraded to National Park status in 1968. A northern extension was added to the park in 1974 and the lake was designated as a Ramsar site in 1990.
The foundation of the parks food chains is the cyanophyte spirulina platensis, which can support huge numbers of lesser flamingo.
Amboseli National Park
Finally, this Amazing Kenya safari heads to Amboseli national park. This is an Amazing Kenya safari to a long-standing highlight of Kenya’s safari circuit. Amboseli was set aside as a wildlife reserve in 1899 and made a national park in 1974.
Amboseli National Park is renowned for its high density of elephants. The park forms the unfenced core of an 8,000 km2 ecosystem. This includes large tracts of Maasai community land both in Kenya and across the border in Tanzania.
Amboseli lies at the northern base of Kilimanjaro. Clouds permitting, it offers tremendous opportunity to photograph plains wildlife below the snow-capped peak of Africa’s tallest mountain.
Kilimanjaro – the world’s tallest freestanding mountain and Africa’s highest peak – actually stands within Tanzania. However, the best and picturesque views of it are to be had from Amboseli National Park.
For much of the day, the volcanically-formed mountain is rendered invisible by a shroud of clouds. This usually lifts at dusk and dawn to reveal the iconic snow-capped peak rising a full 5 km above the dusty plains in all its breathtaking glory.
There is a dominating blue presence on maps of the park, the eponymous Lake Amboseli. This lake only holds water briefly in years of exceptional rainfall. The rest of the time, this flat dry dust bowl supports large numbers of wildlife.
The animals found around Lake Amboseli include wildebeest, zebra and gazelle, and open-country birds. The common birdlife here are the secretary-bird, Yellow-necked spurfowl and the localised Pangani longclaw.
