2 Day Akagera Safari Tour Itinerary in Detail
Day 1: Kigali – Akagera National Park
You will be met upon arrival at Kigali International Airport. This will be by our Rwanda safari guide. This will be followed by a briefing on the 2-day Rwanda safari tour. It is time for departure to Akagera National Park.
Your drive will head to Eastern Rwanda. This is approximately two and a half hours drive. There will be a lot to watch out for on the way. This includes the beautiful landscapes of Rwanda. This is a hilly country hence the name ‘Land of a Thousand hills’.
You will enjoy a nature walk upon arrival at Akagera National Park. You will be transferred to Akagera Game Lodge to check in for lunch. Enjoy some short rest before embarking on an afternoon canoe ride on Lake Ihema. This will reward you with views of water loving animals and birds. They include hippos and out-sized crocodiles.
Birds include the papyrus gonolek, shoebill stork and African fish eagle. You will also be on the lookout for wildlife drinking water along the lake shores. Return back to your Akagera accommodation in the evening. This will be in time for dinner and overnight.
About Akagera National Park
Akagera national park found in eastern Rwanda is a 2500 sq km of Savannah land. The park is named after Kagera River that flows along Rwanda’s eastern boundary. The river feeds into Lake Ihema and other smaller lakes in and around the park.
The park protects an African Savannah landscape of acacia and bush. It has patches of open grassland and a dozen swampy lakes. It has exceptional levels of biodiversity and forms a large protected wetland.
Akagera national park is the only Savannah national park in Rwanda. This is the only place to sight most of the large mammals while on safari in Rwanda.
Whereas there are forest elephants in the other parks, it is quite difficult to sight them.
Akagera national park is home to a variety of wildlife. They include, elephants, buffalos, giraffe, zebras, leopards, hyenas, lions. It is home to several antelopes like bushbucks and Topis. We also have Oribis, water-buck, roan antelope and duiker, bohor reedbuck and klipspringer. You cannot miss out on the impala and world largest antelope – the Cape eland.
At Akagera National park, watch schools of hippos and crocodiles basking in the sun. This is on your boat ride on the lake Ihema.
The common primates in Akagera national park are olive baboons. We also have Vervet monkeys, blue monkeys and bush babies who are often seen on night drives.
Day 2: Akagera National Park – Kigali
Start your day on Rwanda safari to Akagera with an early breakfast. This will be followed by the early morning game drive. This will reward you with views of lots of wildlife. They include elephants, impala, black-tailed mongoose, hippos and oribi. You may also see the bushbuck, antelope, zebra, cape eland, giraffe and buffalo.
There are primates too which include the olive baboon, vervet monkey and bush baby. You will return to the lodge for lunch and check out. You will drive back to Kigali to be dropped off at your preferred Kigali hotel. If you are leaving Rwanda then enjoy a transfer to the airport. This will be in time for departure flight.
