Detailed 3 days Akagera National Park Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali – Akagera National Park
You will be met on arrival at the airport by Rwanda safari guide. You will be briefed on this 3 days Akagera National Park safari. This will be followed by a departure to Akagera National Park. Your drive will head to Eastern Rwanda.
There will be a lot to watch out for on the way. This includes the beautiful landscapes of Rwanda. This is a hilly country hence the name ‘Land of a Thousand hills’. You will enjoy a nature walk upon arrival at Akagera National Park. You will be transferred to Akagera Game Lodge in time for lunch.
Embark on an afternoon game drive at 1600hrs. This will reward you with views of lots of wildlife. They include elephants, impala, black-tailed mongoose, hippos and oribi. You may also see the bushbuck, antelope, zebra, cape eland, giraffe and buffalo.
There are primates too which include the olive baboon, vervet monkey and bush baby. Return to your accommodation in Akagera for dinner and overnight.
About Akagera National Park
Akagera National Park is located in the east of Rwanda. Kibungu is the city that is nearest to this Rwanda National Park. This is best starting point.
Akagera National Park covers over 2500 sq km of savannah. This is west of the Kagera River, which denotes the frontier with Tanzania. The park has a variety of wildlife and is a habitat for over 500 different species of birds.
There are accommodation facilities on the edge of the park at Gabiro, 100 km (60 miles) to the north. It is best not to visit the park in the rainy season. This covers December, March and April. The reason being many of the routes become impassable.
Akagera comes as an exciting surprise after the steep cultivated hills. This includes the breezy climate that characterizes the rest of the country.
The park is set at a relatively low altitude along the Tanzanian border. This beautiful game reserve protects an archetypal African savannah landscape. Vegetation here include acacia and brachystegia bush, interspersed with patches of open grassland.
There are also a dozen swamp-fringed lakes. These follow the meandering course of the Akagera River.
Day 2: Akagera – Rusumo Water Falls – Akagera
Start your 3 days Akagera National Park tour with an early breakfast. This will be followed by a transfer to Rusumo waterfall. You will pass via the Imigongo traditional handcraft makers. It is time to sample Mother Nature’s wonderful scene. This beauty of the waterfall is worth the visit.
You will return to your lodge for lunch and a short rest. In the afternoon you have a boat riding in Ihema Lake. You will visit Nyirabiyoro historical island. This is home to many crocodiles, hippos and other species of rare birds. Your dinner and overnight will be at Akagera Game Lodge.
Day 3: Akagera National Park – Kigali
Your 3 days Akagera National Park tour day will begin with an early breakfast. You will then venture out on a morning game drive. You will make circuit which takes you to different lakes.
Expect to see buffaloes and elephants drinking from the water ponds. There are other species of birds like Egyptian goose and fish eager. You will stop for a picnic lunch in the park then continue with the hills game drive. Expect to see impalas, zebras, bush bucks, water bucks and topis. There are also oribis, baboons, giraffes, cape elands and so many others.
You will drive to the beautiful bushy rolling hills up to the north exit of the park. Later drive back to Kigali where you will arrive in the afternoon. Upon arrival you will have a transfer to the airport or drop off at your Kigali Hotel.
