About Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls National Park lies at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley, where the sweeping Bunyoro escarpment tumbles into vast, palm-dotted savanna. First gazetted as a game reserve in 1926, it is Uganda's largest and oldest conservation area, hosting 76 species of mammals and 451 birds.
The park is bisected by the Victoria Nile, which plunges 45m over the remnant rift valley wall, creating the dramatic Murchison Falls, the centerpiece of the park and the final event in an 80km stretch of rapids. The mighty cascade drains the last of the river's energy, transforming it into a broad, placid stream that flows quietly across the rift valley floor into Lake Albert.
This stretch of river provides one of Uganda's most remarkable wildlife spectacles. Regular visitors to the riverbanks include elephants, giraffes and buffaloes; while hippos, Nile crocodiles and aquatic birds are permanent residents.
Day Two – Murchison Falls Park:
Your 3 Day Murchison Falls Tour begins with an early morning breakfast. With all system go, you will be off to another game drive across the savanna. You will go along the River Nile on Lake Albert Delta. The area is known for abundant wildlife as you move slowly as the sun rises.
Expect to see lions, leopards, elephants, hippos, buffaloes, warthogs, giraffes, humorous appearing warthogs. You will return to the lodge for late breakfast, some relaxation and lunch.
After lunch you will embark on another one of the highlights of your Murchison Falls National Park Safari. This is the boat safari trip up the Nile River. Slowly moving along the river bank you are likely to see crocodiles, an abundance of hippos, elephants and buffaloes.
Also in your menu today are antelopes, lots of birds including the fish eagle, storks and so much more. The boat moves gently up the river and stay on the left hand side. This is to let you see most of the animals who come to the river. You get to observe herds of Elephants cooling off, Hippopotamus frolicking, crocodiles just dozing in the African sun.
Voila! Just before your eyes appears the Murchison Falls, it is one of the most powerful waterfall in the World. The River Nile is 50 meters wide above the falls. It moves down through a 6-meter gorge and falls down 43 meters. The crashing sound below is deafening and the sight makes one realize how forceful nature can be.
Close by, there is a bank on the river filled with Nile crocodiles basking in the afternoon sun. Just down from there you can see a group of hippos frolicking in the water of the Nile. There are literally thousands of hippopotamus to be found here, birds in abundance.
At the bottom of the falls disembark and take the guided hike up along the Murchison Falls. You will be cooled down with some mist from the falls to keep you comfortable. At the top of the falls you are met by your driver guide and you will cross the Nile by ferry and head back to your lodge for dinner and rest.
Day 3: Murchison Falls Park – Return to Kampala
After an early breakfast you will proceed for a forest walk in Pabidi Forest in search of chimpanzees. Other primates resident in this forest include l’ hoestes, red colobus, blues, red tailed monkeys and grey cheeked mangabeys.
The guide will provide detailed explanations, not only about primates, but also on all the forest flora and fauna and will ensure that your walk is both informative and enjoyable. This walk is excellent for bird watching and for seeing primates at close quarters.
Proceed for lunch before driving out of the park. Your destination will be the capital Kampala. End your 3 Day Murchison Falls Tour Itinerary with a drop off at your hotel in Kampala.
