3 Day Lake Manyara Safari Itinerary
Day 1: ARRIVE IN ARUSHA
Our Tanzania safari rep will be at JRO for meet and greet. Upon meeting you will be briefed on the 3 days Lake Manyara Safari. You will depart Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). This will be on a transfer basis headed to Arusha. This is Tanzania’s tourism capital.
It is also the launching pad for all Northern circuit safaris. It is in Arusha that the rest of the day is spent at leisure. Your overnight stay will be at the Ilboru Safari Lodge.
This Tanzania safari lodge is beautifully located on the slope of Mt. Meru. What a perfect place to prepare for your adventure! Your accommodation at this lodge in Arusha will be on bed and breakfast basis.
About Lake Manyara National Park
Established in 1960, Lake Manyara National Park extends over 330 sq km of the northern Rift Valley floor southwest of Arusha. Its centre-piece is Lake Manyara, a fluctuating body of alkaline water set within a shallow sump at the base of the Rift Valley.
To the southeast, a scattering of extinct volcanoes rise in splendid isolation from the open plains of the Maasai Steppes. To the west, the lake is hemmed in by the 600m-high golden-brown rift escarpment alluded to in its name – an emanyara being the spiky protective hedge grown around a Maasai boma.
Manyara’s dramatic setting was once extolled by Ernest Hemingway as “the loveliest that I had seen in Africa” and by documentary maker Colin Willock as “the most luxuriant place in the whole East African Rift”.
Today, however, the park is frequently bypassed by safari goers in their enthusiasm to reach the world-renowned Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
This is a shame: not only does Manyara make a convenient first stop out of Arusha, but it’s remarkable habitat diversity compressed within a relatively small area ensures that it offers a virtual microcosm of the Tanzanian safari experience.
Day 2: SAFARI TO LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK
You will wake up to a no pressure 3 days Lake Manyara safari breakfast. After checking out of your lodge, depart for Lake Manyara. This drive goes through Arusha Town as you head to Lake Manyara National Park.
This park is one of the most diverse reserves in Tanzania. This is despite the fact that it is one of the smallest Tanzania parks. Lake Manyara which is a salty lake covers two thirds of the park.
At the backdrop is the wall of the Great Rift Valley. In between the wall and the lake lies the ground water forest. These are areas of open grassland near the lake foreshore and the Soda Lake.
You will enjoy a picnic lunch in this area. The area consists of open grassy areas, hot springs, dense woodlands and steep mountainsides. Lake Manyara National Park is a birding paradise. The park has more than 350 species of bird.
Lake Manyara National Park is also famed for its unique and elusive tree-climbing lions. You will have a wonderful time searching for the tree climbing lions and other wildlife.
In the evening you will return to your Lake Manyara lodge. You will dine and sleep at the Lake Manyara Hotel under the cover of the star filled African sky.
