Dune 45 Hike Experience
Dune 45 reaches more than 170 meters. It is named (without imagination) after the distance in kilometers from Sesriem Canyon.
It is not an easy task, as you have to walk along the edge of the dune. This is about a foot wide and your feet continuously sink into the sand. It just feels as if you will never arrive at the top, making it quite harsh to continue. To hike up the dune is quite some hard work.
Finally, one hour later, as a true “survivor”, you reach the top, all you want to do is just sit and wait for the sun to rise. Though it is freezing cold, you will be in sweat. This is rather quickly dried by the cold, which makes it even more uncomfortable.
Just before the sun lights up, the dunes start to be covered by dark blue shadows. This is just a big – silent – ‘wow’, leaving you speechless.
As far as you can see, as the sun rises, it is only gigantic dunes up to 300 m high. Their rich tints range from pale apricot to vivid reds and oranges or golden-red colors.
It is a fabulous unforgettable dune dream come true experience. This will for sure stay in your memory forever.
As the sun continued to rise, temperature climbs fast. You have to take a difficult decision: to leave and go down saying good bye to Dune 45.
In less than hour, wind blows again strongly at the top. This causes great pain if you don’t protect your arms and face. The sand will become just too hot to stand on it.
Likely, to go down is a lot easier and you do in a couple of minutes what took you more than one hour to climb.
Day 2: Sossusvlei
A pre-dawn departure is essential to catch the sunrise on the desert. Your 3 day Sossusvlei tour in Namibia heads straight into the heart of the dune field. You will reach Sossusvlei itself by walking the last 5km through the dunes. 4×4 shuttles are available for those who prefer not to walk.
The huge star dunes on either side dwarf everything else as you move up. There are ancient mineral pans and stunted camel thorn trees. They make for perfect photo opportunities. The morning is spent in and around Sossusvlei. This will include a visit to Dune 45.
Many people think the name originates because it is about 45km from Sesriem. That is not the case though. It’s because of the numbering system devised by conservation staff. By coincidence it happens to be dune number 45 on the map. It is worth noting that as a coincidence, the dune is 45km from Sesriem.
There will be a lunch stop at Sesriem to escape from the heat of the afternoon. You will have relaxation till the day cools off in the late afternoon. This is the time to embark on a short excursion to the Sesriem Canyon. Your dinner and overnight will be at Sesriem Camp.

What Does Sossusvlei mean?
The origin of the term Sossusvlei is from two different languages, the Nama and Afrikaans. The simple translation of this term Sossusvlei is “dead-end marsh”.
From the Nama, we have the term Sossus. This term can be translated to mean a ’Marsh’ or a ‘Marshy place’. It forms the first part of the term Sossusvlei.
The last part is ‘Vlei’ which has its origins from Afrikaans. This term refers to ‘an end’ or a ‘dead end’. It therefore refers to the marsh at the end of the Tsauchab River Course.
This 3 day Namibia tour safari goes to Sossusvlei where the dunes meet. Because of the meeting point, the course of the river has been cut and thus the dunes prevent the Tsauchab River from flowing any further.
As a result of the blockage by the dunes and the marshy end of Tsauchab River, we get the term Sossusvlei or “dead-end marsh” arises.
Namib desert is the largest desert in the world and among the driest. Because of the temperature and the dryness, the Tsauchab River will seldom flow up to the pan.
It is however important to note that there are some exceptional long rainy seasons in the Naukluft Mountains.
During such rainy seasons, the pan gets filled to capacity and appears as a lake. As a result, there are lots of wildlife concentration hence great numbers of visitors from all over the world. They come to witness this remarkable site.
