It is time for departure to Akagera National Park. Your drive will head to Eastern Rwanda. This is approximately two and a half hours drive.
There will be a lot to watch out for on the way. This includes the beautiful landscapes of Rwanda. This is a hilly country hence the name ‘Land of a Thousand hills’. This will reward you with views of water loving animals and birds. They include hippos and out-sized crocodiles. Birds include the papyrus gonolek, shoebill stork and African fish eagle. You will also be on the lookout for wildlife drinking water along the lake shores. Return back to your Akagera accommodation in the evening. This will be in time for dinner and overnight.
About Akagera National Park
Akagera National Park is one of Rwanda’s most popular tourist attractions and it keeps getting better and better each year. It’s been under the combined management of RDB and African Parks (a conservation non-profit based in South Africa) since 2010.
Akagera Park is located to the Eastern province of Rwanda about two hours away from Kigali. The road is mostly paved until about a half hour before you get to the entrance when things get a bit bumpy and dusty… to get you ready for the park experience!
Akagera is home to lots of animals including elephants, buffalo, giraffe and zebras, 11 antelope species, and elusive lions and leopards. If you’ve been on game drives in places like Kenya or South Africa then you might find Rwanda’s little park less exciting as the animals aren’t quite as plentiful as they are in the Serengeti’s of the world.
But a trip to Akagera National Park in Rwanda is still highly recommended and it makes for a great day or overnight trip away from Kigali.
Day 2: Akagera National Park – Kigali
Start your day on Akagera safari tour with an early breakfast. This will be followed by the early morning game drive. This will reward you with views of lots of wildlife. They include elephants, impala, black-tailed mongoose, hippos and oribi. You may also see the bushbuck, antelope, zebra, cape eland, giraffe and buffalo.
There are primates too which include the olive baboon, vervet monkey and bush baby. You will return to the lodge for lunch and check out. You will drive back to Kigali to be dropped off at your preferred Kigali hotel. If you are leaving Rwanda then enjoy a transfer to the airport. This will be in time for departure flight.
